Industrial Dehumidification Systems

Most think of dehumidification in terms of industrial processes. Pharmaceutical companies, investment casting facilities, and plastic manufacturers all rely on dehumidification systems to provide a steady-state year-round environment necessary to make their products turn out as perfectly as possible. Dehumidification systems are also used to improve air quality and increase comfort in supermarkets, restaurants, ice skating rinks, and medical facilities.

Now it is necessary to think of using dehumidification for other applications, such as schools, office buildings and theaters, where increased ventilation rates required by ASHRAE Standard 62-1999, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality are used.

Dehumidification systems generally fall into two classifications: Mechanical cooling and desiccant systems. Mechanical cooling systems are capable of dehumidifying air down to about 50 grain, equal to 42% RH at 72°F room conditions. For conditions below this point, the mechanical cooling system must operate in conjunction with a desiccant system, which can provide space conditions as low as 15% relative humidity.
